Blue Valentine

Blue Valentine are a band based in Newcastle upon Tyne, in the Northeast of England. The band performs original jazzy songs composed and sung by Lisa de Larny. She's accompanied by Joanne Adams on saxophones and flute, Jonathan Codd on double bass and David Thompson on drums and percussion.
People have found it difficult to categorize Blue Valentine's sound but the word "jazzy" often occurs. One description: "...the jazzy end of Joni Mitchell meets Tracy Chapman in The Beautiful South..." (Greg Platt, Jazz Rounds) Recently a comparison was made with the "feeling" of the music of Norah Jones. Decide for yourself by checking out the sounds page and find out where they're playing next on the gigs page. The sound samples are from a demo recorded live in a studio, hence the samples give a pretty good indication of what the band sounds like live.
The picture at the top of the page is of an oil painting by Lisa. As well as being a singer-songwriter and innovative guitarist, she's a well established sculptor and painter too. (For more of her work, check out the links page.) Jonathan has played his bass in many jazz bands, recorded with Paul Jeans, currently plays with Dr Brown's Blues Band and has worked with Paul Fisher - a well respected singer-songwriter from Newcastle too. David tours extensively and has drummed his way around the world. Since joining the band, Joanne's saxophones and flute have added an extra dimension to the overall sound. Joanne has worked throughout the musical spectrum - from jazz to classical.
For smaller and more intimate venues, Blue Valentine also play as a duo: vocals, guitar and double bass.
Hope to see you soon, best wishes, Blue Valentine.
